For 125 years, Side by Side has been there for Bay Area youth, through good times and bad. Through all that time, it’s our staff whose patience, compassion, and dedication has made the difference. This year is no different.
The story of Side by Side continues as we follow three clients (from Irene M. Hunt School, Real Alternatives, and YouThrive) and their providers on their journeys. We are so appreciative of all of the participants, as well as cinematographer Andrew Hida.
The story of Side by Side comes to life through letters between our youth and providers. We are so grateful to all of the participants and our amazing cinematographer Andrew Hida.

The Irene M. Hunt School offers a therapeutic environment for students in grades K through 12 who struggle with behavioral and emotional challenges and provides them with an individualized education tailored to their specific needs. Students develop the capability to regulate their behavior, maintain focus and resilience, and form healthy, trusting relationships – all foundational elements for lifelong learning. These are two parents’ stories of how the Hunt School helped their sons.
Our Space, a program of Side by Side, offers a vibrant safe space for Alameda County youth ages 11-23 with services that include support groups in schools, culturally relevant therapy, community-based trainings for organizations working with LGBTQ youth, and a community drop in center.
