It highlights the inspiring path of Ben Freeman—a former Irene M. Hunt School student—through his and his mother’s eyes, Deanna Brock (Side by Side’s Board President).
At Side by Side, we walk alongside young people impacted by adversity, supporting them on their unique journeys to heal from trauma, rebuild resilience, and embrace their full potential.

Side by Side operates across the Bay Area, providing young people ages 5-26 and family members with critical services that span behavioral and mental health, early intervention in schools, LGBTQIA+ support, transitional housing for foster youth, and special education.

Join The TAY Action Team
The California Youth Empowerment Network (CAYEN) was formed in 2006 to develop, educate, and strengthen the voices of Transition Age Youth (TAY; youth ages 15-26) to shape local and statewide public policy.

Our Annual Report has arrived—and it’s hitting mailboxes now.
In 2024–2025, Side by Side served more than 3,100 youth and family members across four counties, delivering integrated mental health care, special education, LGBTQIA+‑affirming programs, housing, and life‑skills support. This year’s report also celebrates 130 years of walking side by side with Bay Area youth and features stories on Enhanced Care Management, the Independent Living Program, community outreach, and our historic roots.
